A 24-hr inhalation of 1,1,1-tricholoroethane (methylchloroform), 3,000 ppm, reduced pentobarbital hypnosis and increased hexobarbitaloxidation by the 9,000 x g liver supernatant fraction in male mice. On the other hand, an ip injection of methylchloroform, l ml/kg, increased the duration of pentobarbital hypnosis and reduced hexobarbital metabolism by the liver microsomal enzymes. The potentioating effect of methylchloroform on pentobarbital hypnosis as diminished when it was diluted with olive oil, but was markedly enhanced when diluted with dimethysusoxide (DMSO) before injection.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways. The available treatment options have major limitations owing to low efficacy, associated adverse events and compliance issues. Therefore, the health burden of bronchial asthma is increasing globally at an alarming rate, providing a strong impetus for the development of new therapeutics. Myrica sapida is known traditionally in Ayurveda to possess anti-asthmatic activity. Hence, the present investigation was undertaken to evaluate the bronchodilator and anti-anaphylactic activity of the stem bark of Myrica sapida.

BACKGROUND: The upper respiratory tract functions to protect lower respiratory structures from chemical and biological agents in inspired air. Cellular oxidative stress leading to acute and chronic inflammation contributes to the resultant pathology in many of these exposures and is typical of allergic disease, chronic sinusitis, pollutant exposure, and bacterial and viral infections. Little is known about the effective means by which topical treatment of the nose can strengthen its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory defenses.

A complex scheme of prophylaxis of exacerbation and progression of chronic bronchopulmonary diseases in children was developed. It included the use of bicillin, stimulating therapy, desensibilizing drugs, vitamins, proteolytic enzymes, physiotherapy, physical excercises, massage, sanation of the chronic infection foci and interferone administration during influenza. 466 patients were subjected to the active prophylaxis for a period of 1-3 years. No exacerbation of progressing of chronic pneumonia was observed in 81.3 per cent of the children subjected to bicillin prophylaxis for 3 years.

The therapy of the respiratory tract should always include physiotherapy. Out of the various possible kinds of application is to develop a strategic long-term programme according to the building-stone principle, especially of the chronical unspecific lung diseases. The most important subjects, coming into question, are the aerosol-therapy, the respiratory-therapy, the massage-treatment, the hydrotherapy, the climato- and health-resort-therapy and other kinds of physiotherapy. This contribution enters upon the importance and the possibilities of employment of the various subjects.

The development of dry powder inhalation (DPI) products of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) remains to be a challenge due to chemical complexity and batch-to-batch variations in constituent composition. This study was to investigate the feasibility of using spray-dried corrugated particles to improve the aerodynamic performance of a TCM, Shuang-Huang-Lian (SHL), in carrier-based DPI. Particles with different surface roughness were spray-dried by the addition of leucine and concomitant manipulation of spray-drying parameters.
