The present study investigates cortical structures associated with personality dimension of positivity (POS) by using a standardized low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA), which provides EEG localization measures that are independent of the recording reference. Resting EEG and self-report measures of positivity, self-esteem, life satisfaction, and optimism were collected from 51 female undergraduates. EEG was recorded across 29 scalp sites. Anterior and posterior source alpha asymmetries of cortical activation were obtained by using sLORETA.

Western communities are becoming increasingly more interested in altered states of consciousness such as hypnosis, meditation and other states associated with certain "brain wave" patterns. In the United States of America especially, psychophysiological research is beginning to lead to an understanding of some of the basic mechanisms underlying certain mental phenomena and their therapeutic uses. In Australia, on the other hand, experimental investigations in this area are negligible. It is important to begin intensive psychophysiological research now.

Ss were monitored for respiratory rate, pulse rate, blood pressure, skin resistance, EEG activity, and muscle activity. They were monitored during the alert state, meditation (TM or simple word type), hypnosis (relaxation and task types), and relaxation. Ss gave a verbal comparative evaluation of each state. The results showed significantly better relaxation responses for the relaxation states (relaxation, relaxation-hypnosis, meditation) than for the alert state.

Fourier-analysis of the EEG (P4 02, P3 O1, CZ A1) in the stimulation period (1 sec) before acoustic stimulation showed significant differences between hypnosis and waking. Diminished power was found in the slower spectrum (0-3 and 4-7 c/sec) over the right hemisphere (P4O2) during hypnosis. Increased power was found in the alpha-spectrum (8-13 c/sec) over the Vertex (CZA1) during suggestion. We interpreted this effect as inhibition of exteroceptive perception during suggestion.

Investigated relative effects of hypnosis, alpha biofeedback, prestige suggestion, and silence in attenuating experimentally induced increases in death anxiety. Forty female undergraduate Ss at Louisiana State University were tested on four measures of death anxiety: "Emotional" associations to "death" words, association response latencies to "death" vs. "neutral" words, Death Anxiety Scale, and Death Concern Scale.
