Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes are not associated with clinical symptoms, but they are responsible for transmitting the pathogen to mosquitoes. Therefore, gametocytocidal interventions are important for malaria control and resistance containment. Currently available drugs and vaccines are not well suited for that purpose. Several dyes have potent antimicrobial activity, but their use against gametocytes has not been investigated systematically.

Cholesterol-laden macrophages are the hallmark of atherogenesis. The class B scavenger receptor, CD36, binds oxidized low density lipoprotein (OxLDL), is found in atherosclerotic lesions, and is upregulated by OxLDL. We tested the effects of alpha-tocopherol (AT) enrichment of human monocyte-derived macrophages on CD36 expression and cholesteryl ester accumulation. Monocytes isolated from normal volunteers were cultured into macrophages. Macrophages were enriched overnight with various doses of AT (25, 50, and 100 microM).

Mitochondrial membrane hyperpolarization and morphologic changes are important in inflammatory cell activation. Despite the pathophysiologic relevance, no valid and reproducible method for measuring mitochondrial homeostasis in human inflammatory cells is available currently. The purpose of this study was to define and validate reproducible methods for measuring relevant mitochondrial perturbations and to determine whether these methods could discern mitochondrial perturbations in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), which is a condition associated with altered mitochondrial homeostasis.

How amphetamine affects the neuroglia in living brains is not well understood. In an effort to elucidate this effect, we investigated neuroglia in response to amphetamine exposure using antisense (AS) or sense (S) phosphorothioate-modified oligodeoxynucleotide (sODN) sequences that correspond to glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) mRNA (AS-gfap or S-gfap, respectively) expression. The control is a random-sequence sODN (Ran).

BACKGROUND: Cancer therapies and cancer progression can increase oxidative stress that might account for renal toxicity in cancer patients. Flavin 7 (F7) is a natural polyphenol-containing dietary supplement with potential antioxidant activity. Therefore, it might help to attenuate renal toxicity of chemotherapeutics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cultured mouse renal proximal tubule cells were subjected to H(2)O(2)-mediated oxidative stress.

Angiotensin II (Ang II) is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. We used a traditional Chinese medicine, alpinate oxyphyllae fructus (AOF), to evaluate its effect on Ang II-induced cardiac apoptosis and mitochondrial dysfunction. Ang II-treated H9c2 cells were administered AOF of 20-100 µg/mL concentrations. Ang II significantly increased TUNEL-positive nuclei in the H9c2 cells, effect was inhibited by AOF administration in both pre-treated and post-treated H9c2 cells.
