Iron is essential for organisms. It is mainly utilized in mitochondria for biosynthesis of iron-sulfur clusters, hemes and other cofactors. Mitoferrin 1 and mitoferrin 2, two homologues proteins belonging to the mitochondrial solute carrier family, are required for iron delivery into mitochondria. Mitoferrin 1 is highly expressed in developing erythrocytes which consume a large amount of iron during hemoglobinization. Mitoferrin 2 is ubiquitously expressed, whose functions are less known.

DNA methylation is an epigenetic mark that is essential for the development of mammals; it is frequently altered in diseases ranging from cancer to psychiatric disorders. The presence of DNA methylation attracts specialized methyl-DNA binding factors that can then recruit chromatin modifiers. These methyl-CpG binding proteins (MBPs) have key biological roles and can be classified into three structural families: methyl-CpG binding domain (MBD), zinc finger, and SET and RING finger-associated (SRA) domain.
We previously reported that (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and grape seed extract (GSE) at high concentration nearly blocked intestinal iron transport across the enterocyte. In this study, we aimed to determine whether small amounts of EGCG, GSE, and green tea extract (GT) are capable of inhibiting iron absorption, to examine if ascorbic acid counteracts the inhibitory action of polyphenols on iron absorption, and to explore the mechanisms of polyphenol-mediated apical iron uptake and basolateral iron release.
Solute carrier 11A1 (SLC11A1) is a divalent ion transporter formerly known as the natural resistance-associated macrophage protein (NRAMP1) and the Bcg/Lsh/Ity locus. SLC11A1 was thought to be exclusively expressed in monocyte/macrophages and to have roles in phagosome maturation and cell activation. We characterized the expression of SLC11A1 in the majority of human and bovine γδ T cells and NK cells and in human CD3(+)CD45RO(+) T cells.

PURPOSE: Hyperthermia enhances cytotoxic effects of chemotherapeutic agents such as cisplatin. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. We hypothesised that hyperthermia increases cisplatin accumulation and efficacy by modulating function of copper transport protein 1 (Ctr1), a major regulator of cellular cisplatin uptake. We examined the significance of Ctr1 in the synergistic interaction between hyperthermia and cisplatin. We assessed the importance of cisplatin- and hyperthermia-induced Ctr1 multimerisation in sensitising cells to cisplatin cytotoxicity.
Manganese-containing fungicides like Mancozeb have been associated with neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson's disease. We examined the behavioral damage and differential neuronal vulnerability resulting from Mancozeb exposure using Caenorhabditis elegans, an important mid-trophic level soil organism that is also a powerful model for studying mechanisms of environmental pollutant-induced neurodegenerative disease.
