OBJECTIVES: Prompt HIV diagnosis and treatment are associated with increased longevity and reduced transmission. The aim of the study was to examine late diagnoses and to assess the quality of care following diagnosis. METHODS: National surveillance and cohort data were used to examine late HIV diagnoses and to assess the quality of care received in the 12 months following HIV diagnosis. RESULTS: In 2011, 79% (4910/6219) of persons (15 years and over) diagnosed with HIV infection had CD4 counts reported within 3 months; of these, 49% were diagnosed late (CD4 count < 350 cells/?L).

This article presents data from an AIDS clinical trial that evaluated 238 (60 percent nonwhite) patients infected with HIV and their clinician's perceptions of medication adherence and visit attendance in relationship to lifestyle, psychosocial, and health belief model (HBM) variables. BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 infected adults with low CD4 cell count have a higher risk of malaria infection and clinical malaria. We assessed the influence that HIV-1 immune suppression has on the efficacy of antimalarial treatment in adults with uncomplicated malaria. METHODS: This clinical trial included 971 Zambian adults with uncomplicated malaria. Patients were tested for HIV-1, and, if positive, a CD4 cell count was assessed. The primary outcome was recurrent parasitemia corrected by molecular genotyping within 45 days after treatment.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: A prospective study on 72 HIV infected and 33 HIV negative individuals undergoing malaria treatment with dihydroartemisinin (Cotecxin) was undertaken to compare CD4 cells count, viral load and parasite density at two time-points, a baseline visit and a 9-day post-treatment visit. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Data came from interviews of 538 parents with 1017 children (0-17 years old) from a nationally representative sample of HIV-infected adults receiving health care in the United States.
