PURPOSE: To assess attitudes toward complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and its place in the medical school curriculum and medical practice among preclinical students at Georgetown University School of Medicine (GUSOM), Washington, DC. METHOD: Two-hundred sixty-six first-year (n=111) and second-year (n=155) medical students rated their attitudes toward CAM and 15 CAM modalities in terms of personal use, inclusion in the curriculum, and use/utility in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Surgeons General, the Institute of Medicine, and others have called for physicians to be role models for meeting the obesity epidemic. There are few published reports describing undergraduate medical education obesity curriculum elements. Physician experiences, knowledge, and attitudes have been shown to affect patient counseling behavior of physicians. METHODS: Required and extra credit obesity educational interventions were designed for third-year family medicine clerkship.

PURPOSE: To assess attitudes and expectations of obstetric patients toward the involvement of medical students in their care. METHOD: At the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont in 1991, questionnaire responses were collected from 222 obstetric patients who had been assisted by clerkship students from the University of Vermont College of Medicine and 78 patients who had refused the participation of students.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the attitudes and expectations that obstetric patients and medical students bring to the student-patient relationship in intrapartum care. METHODS: Written questionnaires were distributed to obstetric patients who had students assist in their labor and delivery care and to medical students who had completed their clinical clerkship year. Responses of 222 patients and 67 students were analyzed for differences in expectations of student participation and assessment of skills.

Leadership in improving the education of doctors, while impressive, is not happening fast enough. While there are many obstacles, there is no time to waste in restructuring medical education to repair its present deficiencies, for otherwise outside forces could overwhelm today's education leaders with imperatives to make improvements on their own terms. The first step in addressing present shortcomings is to establish measurable objectives for the education of doctors that are aligned with the legitimate expectations of society and the enduring precepts of the medical profession.

OBJECTIVE: The authors examine associations of personality characteristics, National Board of Medical Examiners subject examination performance, and Objective Structured Clinical Examination performance with clinical evaluations of third-year medical students in a psychiatry clerkship. METHODS: Students completed the Revised NEO Personality Inventory, which measures personality domains of neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness and associated personality traits.

BACKGROUND: General practice is a common setting for medical students' clinical training. However, little is known about patients' views on consulting with senior students. AIMS: To investigate patients' attitudes to consultations conducted by senior students alone, before patients saw their GP; and to enquire into patients' perception of their teaching role. METHOD: Adult patients attending 50 health centres in Sweden completed a questionnaire directly after their consultation with a fifth-year medical student and their GP.
