A controlled, quantitative investigation of the electroencephalogram (EEG) and transcendental meditation (TM) revealed that EEG changes during TM were rarely as pronounced or consistent as previous reports suggest. There was considerable variation between subjects, some displaying no EEG changes at all during TM compared with an equal period of non-meditation. Any changes that did occur in a particular individual were not necessarily repeated in a subsequent session.
We studied nociception-associated arousal following laryngoscopy and intubation in patients scheduled for elective open heart surgery, using EEG power spectra and hemodynamics. Either fentanyl (7 micrograms/kg; n = 30) or sufentanil (1 microgram/kg; n = 30) were given in a randomized fashion to induce anesthesia in heavily premedicated patients, followed by pancuronium bromide (100 micrograms/kg).
Impacts of hypnotic drugs on brain function are reflected in the EEG. The EEG monitor Narcotrend performs an automatic classification of the EEG using a scale which was proposed by Kugler for visual evaluation of the EEG. In this article the results of a validation study of the automatic classification algorithms implemented in the EEG monitor Narcotrend are presented. Visual and automatic classification of EEG data recorded in routine clinical practice were compared.

EEG was registered in healthy volunteers before and after their entry into modeling (hypnotic) catalepsy. The brain activity recorded under standard electrode placement (the 10-20 international classification) was processed using a special computer program. The data obtained were digitally represented as sets of standard parameters of EEG patterns in 0,5-32 Hz diapason (alpha-, beta1-, beta2,-, theta-, delta-rythms). These parameters were compared under different functional tests particularly connected with the control of sensomotor brain activity.
: This study reports on the QEEG observations recorded from a yogi during tongue piercing in which he demonstrated voluntary pain control. The QEEG was recorded with a Lexicor 1620 from 19 sites with appropriate controls for impedence and artifacts. A neurologist read the data for abnormalities and the QEEG was analyzed by mapping, single and multiple hertz bins, coherence, and statistical comparisons with a normative database. The session included a meditation baseline and tongue piercing.
