Sixteen patients with body surface area (BSA) burns of 4 per cent to 83 per cent, with whom single hypnotherapeutic interventions were attempted 5.3 +/- 3.4 h post burn, were compared to 16 matched controls. Ten physiological parameters related to fluid volume and haemodynamics were recorded on the first two post burn days. The only significant difference discovered was elevated urine output 0-48 h postburn in successfully hypnotized patients (P = 0.01).

Previously, we described a direct inhibitory effect of sodium artesunate on sodium chloride transport in the thick ascending limb of Henle's loop, indicating that artesunate acts as a diuretic agent. Here we present 2 cases of falciparum malaria treated with 4 intravenous 60-mg doses of sodium artesunate. Neither diuretics nor vasoactive drugs were administered. A rise in diuresis (6 L/24 hours) was accompanied by an increase in natriuresis, and both declined at the end of the treatment.
OBJECTIVE: The efficacy of liraglutide, a human glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analog, to prevent or delay diabetes in UCD-T2DM rats, a model of polygenic obese type 2 diabetes, was investigated. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: At 2 months of age, male rats were divided into three groups: control, food-restricted, and liraglutide. Animals received liraglutide (0.2 mg/kg s.c.) or vehicle injections twice daily. Restricted rats were food restricted to equalize body weights to liraglutide-treated rats.

BACKGROUND: Taraxacum officinale (L.) Weber (Asteraceae) has been extensively employed as a diuretic in traditional folk medicine and in modern phytotherapy in Europe, Asia, and the Americas without prior clinical trial substantiation. OBJECTIVES: In this pilot study, a high-quality fresh leaf hydroethanolic extract of the medicinal plant T. officinale (dandelion) was ingested by volunteers to investigate whether an increased urinary frequency and volume would result. DESIGN: Volume of urinary output and fluid intake were recorded by subjects.

INTRODUCTION: Ceratopteris pteridoides is a semiaquatic fern of the Parkeriacea family, widely used in the Colombian folk medicine as a diuretic and cholelithiasic, of which there are no scientific reports that validate its popular use. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the acute and short-term repeated-dose diuretic effect of the ethanolic and aqueous extracts of C. pteridoides in an in vivo model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The total ethanolic extract was obtained by maceration of the whole plant of C. pteridoides with ethanol and the aqueous extract by decoction at 60°C for 15 minutes.
