The living matrix is defined as the continuous molecular fabric of the organism, consisting of fascia, the other connective tissues, extracellular matrices, integrins, cytoskeletons, nuclear matrices and DNA. The extracellular, cellular and nuclear biopolymers or ground substances constitute a body-wide reservoir of charge that can maintain electrical homeostasis and "inflammatory preparedness" throughout the organism.

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to evaluate whether surgical clips affect tissue conductivity and thereby alter the induction of radiofrequency ablation lesions and to determine whether therapy is safe after previous placement of clips in the liver. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An ex vivo porcine hepatic model was used. Three clips were placed around a radiofrequency electrode at 10, 20, and 30 mm from the point of insertion. Clips were arranged in a plane either perpendicular or parallel to the electrode track.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have shown that grounding produces quantifiable physiologic changes. This study was set up to reproduce and expand earlier electrophysiologic and physiologic parameters measured immediately after grounding with improved methodology and state-of-the-art equipment. DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: A multiparameter double-blind experiment was conducted with 14 men and 14 women (age range: 18-80) in relatively good health. Subjects were screened for health problems using a commonly used health questionnaire.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this pilot study was to determine whether there are markers that can be used to study the effects of grounding on delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS). DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: Eight (8) healthy subjects were exposed to an eccentric exercise that caused DOMS in gastrocnemius muscles of both legs. Four (4) subjects were grounded with electrode patches and patented conductive sheets connected to the earth. Four (4) control subjects were treated identically, except that the grounding systems were not connected to the earth.

The present study describes the responses of cortisol, prolactin and growth hormone (GH) to emotions elicited during sessions in which an hypnoidal state was induced. The purpose of the study was to provide answers for the following questions: 1) Do sessions with an emotional content have more hormonal surges than baseline, relaxation-only, sessions? 2) Does the induction of a fantasy of pregnancy and nursing elicit a prolactin response? 3) Are there any associations between surges of different hormones?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Studies from the anesthesiology literature published in the last 2 years were selected to illustrate the most important developments in the field of pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic modeling. RECENT FINDINGS: The pharmacokinetic models focused on incorporating covariate, especially age for pediatric-geriatric use, and altered physiological states. The pharmacodynamic models studied the effect of rate of anesthetic administration, age, experimental conditions, and delay within the monitor on estimation of drug concentration in the biophase.

BACKGROUND: Patients with ischemic heart disease may require antianginal and/or antiarrhythmic regimes. These patients may also be candidates for implantable defibrillators. The effects of antiarrhythmics, such as bretylium, or calcium antagonists, such as verapamil, nifedipine, or diltiazem on internal defibrillation efficacy have been inconsistent or are unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS: The effects of bretylium and verapamil on the energy requirements for ventricular defibrillation threshold (DFT) were determined in 92 open-chest anesthetized pigs.
