BACKGROUND: In previous articles by this author and his colleagues in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, it has been shown that physical reality consists of two uniquely different categories of substance, one being electric charge-based while the other appears to be magnetic charge-based. Normally, only the electric atom/molecule type of substance is accessible by our traditional measurement instruments. We label this condition as the uncoupled state of physical reality that is our long-studied, electric atom/molecule level of nature.

BACKGROUND: Biofield therapies (such as Reiki, therapeutic touch, and healing touch) are complementary medicine modalities that remain controversial and are utilized by a significant number of patients, with little information regarding their efficacy. PURPOSE: This systematic review examines 66 clinical studies with a variety of biofield therapies in different patient populations. METHOD: We conducted a quality assessment as well as a best evidence synthesis approach to examine evidence for biofield therapies in relevant outcomes for different clinical populations.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a battery of biofield awareness tasks that address bioelectromagnetic and consciousness related mechanisms of action, and examine individual differences in integrative biofield awareness (IBA). METHODS: Six (6) biofield awareness tasks were designed: 2 involved the experimenter placing his or her hands near the subject, 2 involved intense staring with associated eye movements approximately 3' from the subject, and 2 involved gentle intention with virtually no movement. Each task required a binary response from the subject.

The concept of a "life energy" can be found in many cultures in the present time, as well as in past eras reaching back to the ancients. Variously called qi (chi), ki, the "four humors,"prana, "archaeus,"cosmic aether,"universal fluid,"animal magnetism," and "odic force," among other names, this purported biofield is beginning to yield its properties and interactions to the scientific method.

Results of treating 181 patients for hemiparesis after a cerebral stroke or a craniocerebral injury by local exposure of the pathological focus to decimeter electromagnetic waves (DW) and alternating magnetic field (AMF) are presented. It is shown that these treatment methods improve the cerebral circulation and contribute to earlier restoration of the motor functions, especially, if used in combination with sulfide baths, therapeutic physical exercises and massage.

A two-stage augmentation mammaplasty was performed on 231 patients (462 implants) over a period of 3 years. Two hundred and sixteen of the cavities (47 percent) were found to have hematomas at the time of the second surgical stage. After removal of the hematomas and completion of the second stage, only 41 breast (9 percent) developed capsular contracture. Treatment of the 41 with Diapulse therapy, massage, and closed capsulotomy completely eliminated all capsular contracture. The period of observation has ranged from 3 months to 2 1/2 years.

AIMS: The development of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) with QRS morphology discrimination and dual-chamber sensing capabilities has improved the differentiation of supraventricular from ventricular tachycardias (VTs). Inappropriate ICD discharges may result from extracardiac signals caused by electromagnetic interference (EMI), because of electric fields and leakage currents from domestic or medical electrical devices, damaged sensing leads, and various cardiac and extracardiac signals that mimic VT and/or ventricular fibrillation.

Twenty subjects (6 male, 14 female) with low back pain were examined by two experienced and licensed chiropractic doctors (E1 and E2). Both examiners examined the patients using a Toftness Electromagnetic Radiation Receiver (EMRR) and by manual palpation (MP) of the spinous processes. Interexaminer reliability was calculated at three sites (L3, L4, L5) for the following combinations: a) E1,MP--E2,MP; b) E1,EMRR--E2,EMRR; c) E1,MP--E2,EMRR; and) d) E2,MP--E1,EMRR, and intraexaminer reliability was calculated for the following variables: e) E1,MP--E1,EMRR; and f) E2,MP--E2,EMRR.
