AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study sought to assess the impact of a standardized protocol to maintain nasoenteral tube (NET) patency in patients requiring fluid restriction and identify factors associated with tube patency. BACKGROUND: Nasoenteral tube obstruction may interrupt nutritional support and prohibit drug administration. Balancing NET patency in the context of fluid restriction can be a challenge. DESIGN AND METHODS: The impact of the standardized protocol was assessed by using a quasi-experimental design and an historical control.

AIMS: Several case reports have demonstrated negative interactions between various physiotherapy modalities and cardiac rhythm devices (CRD). Fear of these potential interactions may lead to suboptimal utilization of physiotherapy treatments in CRD patients. No prior review of available guidelines, or management strategies, on the interaction between physiotherapy modalities and CRD patients has been reported. To review existing guidelines regarding the use of physiotherapy modalities in patients with pacemakers and/or implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs).

It has been claimed that (1) computer professionals should be held responsible for an undisclosed list of "undesirable events" associated with their work and (2) most if not all computer disasters can be avoided by truly understanding responsibility. Programmers, software developers, and other computer professionals should be defended against such vague, counterproductive, and impossible ideals because these imply the mandatory satisfaction of social needs and the equation of ethics with a kind of altruism.

Intraoperative awareness has been reported to occur in 0.8-5.0% of paediatric patients undergoing anaesthesia and, therefore, seems to be more common than in adults (incidence 0.1-0.2%). In adult patients, the consequences of intraoperative awareness are well known and can be severe, in children, however, they have not yet been adequately studied.

AIMS: The development of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) with QRS morphology discrimination and dual-chamber sensing capabilities has improved the differentiation of supraventricular from ventricular tachycardias (VTs). Inappropriate ICD discharges may result from extracardiac signals caused by electromagnetic interference (EMI), because of electric fields and leakage currents from domestic or medical electrical devices, damaged sensing leads, and various cardiac and extracardiac signals that mimic VT and/or ventricular fibrillation.

Electromagnetic interference is well known to cause false sensing in ICDs. Sources may include instrumentation involved with acupuncture, arc welding, electrocautery, diathermy, electrolysis, and transcutaneous electric nerve stimulator units as well as power lines. Patients with ICDs are cautioned to avoid exposure to these sources.
