BACKGROUND: The Ayurvedic medicinal system claims Mucuna pruriens (MP) to possess pro-male fertility, aphrodisiac and adaptogenic properties. Some scientific evidence also supports its pro-male fertility properties; however, the mechanism of its action is not yet clear. The present study aimed at demonstrating spermatogenic restorative efficacy of MP and its major constituent L-DOPA (LD), and finding the possible mechanism of action thereof in a rat model.

We examined the combined estrogenic activity of soybean extract used in a dietary supplement and ethinyl estradiol (EE) contained in an oral contraceptive. Olive oil (control), soybean extract (0.0036 or 0.36 g/kg corresponding to doses of total isoflavone of 0.83 or 83 mg/kg respectively), EE (1 or 10 microg/kg), and soybean extract+EE were administered to ovariectomized CD-1 mice by oral gavage for 4 consecutive days. Soybean extract (0.0036 or 0.36 g/kg) and EE (1 microg/kg) did not increase the relative uterine weight.

The effects of low-dose estrogen and progestogen on menopausal symptoms were studied with Kuppermen score and urinary excretion of calcium as fasting morning urine Ca/Cr ratio in 69 perimenopausal women. The subjects were divided into 3 groups: amenorrhea less than 1 year (14 women); post menopause 1-3 years (19); and post menopause more than 3 years (36). Fasting urine Ca/Cr ratio in the post menopause 1-3 years group was 0.19 +/- 0.01, significantly higher than that (0.14-0.01) in the amenorrhea less than 1 year group and (0.11 +/- 0.006) the post menopause more than 3 years group.
