The retinoblastoma gene Rb is the prototype tumor suppressor and is conserved in Drosophila. We use the developing fly retina as a model system to investigate the role of Drosophila Rb (rbf) during differentiation. This report shows that mutation of rbf and rhinoceros (rno), which encodes a PHD domain protein, leads to a synergistic delay in photoreceptor cell differentiation in the developing eye disc.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the elderly population worldwide. Although recent studies have demonstrated strong genetic associations between AMD and SNPs in a number of genes, other modes of regulation are also likely to play a role in the etiology of this disease. We identified a significantly decreased level of methylation on the IL17RC promoter in AMD patients.

In a review of 402 goniotrephinations the preoperative diagnosis was open-angle glucoma in 61%, chronic congestive glaucoma in 21%, acute glaucoma in 11%, secondary glaucoma in 5%, and juvenile glaucoma in 2%. In 77% of the eyes followed for periods of up to seven years IOP returned to normal. Supplementary local therapy or digital eyeball massage raised the percentage of eyes with normal pressure values to 92,8%. Visual acuity was maintained or improved in 76%.

Pacing and clinical electrophysiology: PACE

The recording of spontaneous episodes of bradycardiac neurocardiogenic syncope (NCS) has shown that: a prolonged ventricular asystole seems necessary to cause syncope; asystole is preceded by other bradyarrhythmias in the vast majority of cases; some warning symptoms precede the loss of consciousness in most cases; conventional dual-chamber pacing is efficacious both in patients with a positive response to carotid sinus massage (CSM) and eyeball compression test (EBC) and in those with a positive response to tilt-testing (TT).

The present study included 160 patients (206 eyes) presenting with the initial and advanced stages of primary open-angle glaucoma. 120 patients (157 eyes) were treated using biologically controlled ultrasound therapy besides traditional medicamentous therapy, the remaining 40 ones (49 eyes) were given only conventional medication. Results of the treatment were evaluated based on a set of commonly used hydrodynamic and electrophysiological characteristics of the quality of visual function.

We used the Honan intraocular pressure reducer, a balloon that applies a constant force, to the eyes in ten subjects with senile cataracts. An initially significant decrease in intraocular pressure after removal disappeared exponentially with a half-time of 9.6 minutes, indicating that the benefits derived from the Honan balloon do not result from a sustained reduction in intraocular pressure. Measurements made on a phantom eye showed both marked variability and unexpectedly high intraocular pressure during typical preoperative digital massage by a group of ophthalmic surgeons.

The main purpose of this study was to determine whether the aging process in the mouse is associated with a pro-oxidizing shift in the redox state of glutathione and whether restriction of caloric intake, which results in the extension of life span, retards such a shift.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of long-term Tai Chi practice on postural balance and H-reflex. Sixteen healthy volunteers, eight with three or more years of experience in Tai Chi training (Tai Chi Group-TCG), and eight with no experience in Tai Chi training (Control Group-CG) participated in the study.

OBJECTIVES: The effects of Okada Purifying Therapy (OPT), a form of subtle energy (biofield) therapy that originated in Japan, were investigated. Electroencephalograms and the Profile of Mood States scores were measured using a crossover design during OPT and placebo sessions. PARTICIPANTS: Nineteen (19) healthy Japanese adults (mean age±standard deviation: 40.8±11.2 years; 10 females) with no previous experience of biofield therapy participated in this study. METHODS: Each session lasted 15 minutes.
