Human microvascular endothelial cells (HMVEC) from adult adipose tissue were cultured in MCDB 131 medium supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum. Under these conditions, HMVEC from seven different donors had finite proliferative life spans ranging from 14.5 to 23.5 population doublings (PD), with a mean life span of 19 PD. Addition of 10% conditioned medium from activated human leukocyte cultures (BM Condimed) extended the life span of HMVEC to 31 to 41 PD, with a mean life span of 37 PD.
Various parameters of the coagulation system have been monitored in patients with Christmas disease following the infusion of clotting factor concentrates. Significant reduction of clotting factor VIII and serum antithrombin III were observed in each of the five studies, whilst the plasma fibrinogen level fell in four subjects. The induced abnormalities were shortlived and there were no clinical sequelae. Further studies are required to assess the effects of similar concentrates in patients with liver disease.
Systematic screening of forty-seven haemophiliacs in Sheffield revealed abnormal liver-function tests in thirty-six (77%), with a tendency for these abnormalities to persist. To assess the importance of these abnormalities, percutaneous liver biopsy was carried out on eight symptom-free patients under factor-VIII cover. A wide spectrum of chronic liver disease was demonstrated, including chronic aggressive hepatitis and cirrhosis. The liver pathology bore no relation to clinical history or to biochemical findings.
Diet and lifestyle produce major effects on tumour incidence, prevalence, and natural history. Moderate dietary restriction has long been recognised as a natural therapy that improves health, promotes longevity, and reduces both the incidence and growth of many tumour types. Dietary restriction differs from fasting or starvation by reducing total food and caloric intake without causing nutritional deficiencies. No prior studies have evaluated the responsiveness of malignant brain cancer to dietary restriction.
PURPOSE: To highlight the development and achievements of hemostasis and thrombosis research in China over the past 50 years. DATA SOURCES: Both Chinese and English language literature search using MEDLINE (1990-1998), and original articles published in the main Chinese and international journals. STUDY SELECTION: After reviewing all the main articles on thrombosis and hemostasis, 20 of them were selected that specifically addressed the stated purpose. DATE EXTRATION: The content that could present the progress in hemostasis and thrombosis in China was selected.
