The molluscicidal activity of Sapindus mukorossi and Terminalia chebula fruit powder against the vector snail Lymnaea acuminata was time and concentration dependent. The molluscicidal activity of T. chebula fruit powder (96 h LC(50):93.59 mg L(-1)) was more pronounced than that of S. mukorossi fruit powder (96 h LC(50):119.57 mg L(-1)). A water monitoring system with a new chemical sensor for oil contamination was developed. The sensor had an organic polymer film on a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). The organic film was a hydrocarbon polymer and had high affinities for the organic compounds of petroleum products such as gasoline, kerosene, diesel oil and fuel oil. The monitoring system as composed of a sampling part, a purging part, a humidity control part and a sensor part. The oil in contaminated river water could be detected whose threshold odour number (TON) was less than three.

Artemether is an efficacious antimalarial drug that also displays antischistosomal properties. Laboratory studies have found that artemether curtails the development of adult worms of Schistosoma japonicum, S. mansoni and S. haematobium, and thus prevents morbidity. These findings have been confirmed in clinical trials for the former two parasites; administered orally once every 2-3 weeks, artemether significantly reduced the incidence and intensity of patent infections. Here, we present the first randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of artemether against S.

The present study was carried out to determine the factors causing the disappearance of introduced Salmonella enteritidis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Vibrio cholerae in natural river water. When large numbers of the above organisms (final level 10(7)-10(8) CFU per ml) were added to river water, the decline of their numbers coincided with increasing numbers of protozoa. Furthermore, their survival was improved dramatically if the river water was amended with a eucaryote inhibitor.

According to the measurements in Meiliang bay between 1998-2000, the effects of algal bloom on N, P, and K contents were studied. The results showed that the relationship between the Chl a content and temperature was positive. The lowest contents of NH4(+)-N, TN, and TP were obtained in August and September every year, and their total content was positively related to the Chl a content. The annual change of K content was similar to that of N and P. Compared to the 8th sampling point, the content of N and P at 0th and 6th sampling point was higher, and P was not the limiting factor.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the ecological habit and characteristics of Trichobilharzia cercariae in the Huaihe river system. METHODS: During June of 2002-May of 2003, Radix auricularia snails were collected monthly in Yaohe Fishery of the branch of the Huaihe River. The cercariae, released from the positive snails and collected by Shade Drop Bottle, were examined by direct press. Ducklings were infected by cercariae with different ages and examined for the infection by miracidia hatching method. By using leakage pond to simulate the double cropping paddy fields in Dongtinghu Lake area, this paper studied the effects of urea (CF) and controlled release nitrogen fertilizer (CRNF) on the dynamics of surface water pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total nitrogen (TN), ammonia nitrogen (NH4(+)-N) and nitrate nitrogen (NO3(-)-N) and the runoff loss of TN in alluvial sandy loamy paddy soil and purple calcareous clayed paddy soil, the two main paddy soils in this area.
