OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the anti-arthritic effect of Terminalia chebula hydroalcoholic extract (TCHE) in experimental models and attempts to correlate the effect of treatment on macrophage-derived pro-inflammatory cytokine expression and extent of disease activity. METHODS: Arthritis was induced in rats by subplantar administration of either formaldehyde or complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA). Joint size was measured at regular intervals by using a micrometer screw gauge.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic degenerative autoimmune disease characterized by persistent inflammation of synovial membranes, which leads to cartilage destruction and bone erosion. To date, there are no effective therapies to slow the progress of this degenerative condition. Here, we evaluate the anti-arthritic effect of chebulanin, an abundant anti-inflammatory agent isolated from Terminalia chebula, in collagen induced arthritis in DBA/1 mice by intragastric administration.

The Indian Monocellate Cobra venom (NKV) showed anti-arthritic activity over FCA induced arthritis in male albino rats. NKV treatment (1/20th & 1/10th MLD doses x 13 days, i.p.) showed significant restoration in paw & ankle volume, paw weight. Urinary hydroxyproline, glucosamine, serum ACP, ALP and IL-10 level were restored significantly, due to NKV treatment, as compared with arthritic rats. NKV also showed significant protection against arthritis induced oxidative damages.

Bacopa monniera (L.) Wettst is an Ayurvedic herb with antirheumatic potential. This study investigated the therapeutic efficacy of Bacopa monniera in treating rheumatoid arthritis using a type II collagen-induced arthritis rat model. Arthritis was induced in male Wistar rats by immunization with bovine type II collagen in complete Freund's adjuvant. Bacopa monniera extract (BME) was administered after the development of arthritis from day 14 onwards. The total duration of experiment was 60 days.

BACKGROUND: The number of older adults participating in yoga has increased dramatically in recent years; yet, the physical demands associated with yoga performance have not been reported. The primary aim of the Yoga Empowers Seniors Study (YESS) was to use biomechanical methods to quantify the physical demands associated with the performance of 7 commonly-practiced standing yoga poses in older adults. METHODS: 20 ambulatory older adults (70.7+-3.8 yrs) attended 2 weekly 60-minute Hatha yoga classes for 32 weeks.

One hundred and twenty-nine (87%) of a total county population of 150 eligible diabetic children together with 144 age- and sex-matched control children participated in a longitudinal, epidemiological study of the evolution of diabetic microvascular disease. At enrollment the median (range) age of the diabetic children was 12.5 (3.7-16.8) years with a median diabetes duration of 2.9 (0.1-13.4) years and a median HbAl of 11.1 (6.8-17.9)%.

METHODS: Maximal active ROM was measured by goniometry (Method 1) in 50 patients with Type 1 diabetes and in 44 healthy controls, respectively. The lower limits for normal ranges were defined as mean minus 2 SD. To elicit the prayer sign (Method 2) subjects were asked to put their hands together in a praying position with the fingers fanned.

Joint manipulation has long been used for pain relief. However, the underlying mechanisms for manipulation-related pain relief remain largely unexplored. The purpose of the current study was to determine which spinal neurotransmitter receptors mediate manipulation-induced antihyperalgesia. Rats were injected with capsaicin (50 microl, 0.2%) into one ankle joint and mechanical withdrawal threshold measured before and after injection. The mechanical withdrawal threshold decreases 2 h after capsaicin injection.

Therefore, we undertook studies to determine the antiarthritic efficacy and mechanism of action of a well-characterized turmeric extract using an animal model of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: The composition of commercial turmeric dietary supplements was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography.
