The effects of ageing on progressive deterioration of renal function, both in human and experimental animals, are described elsewhere, but the effect of renal damage on overall survival and longevity is not yet clearly established. The wild-type animals of various genetic backgrounds, fed with regular diet, overtime develop severe age-associated nephropathy, that include but not limited to inflammatory cell infiltration, glomerulosclerosis, and tubulointerstitial fibrosis. Such renal damage significantly reduces their survival.

PURPOSE: Recurrence and persistent side effects of present day treatment for urolithiasis restrict their use, so an alternate solution, using phytotherapy is being sought. The present study attempted to evaluate the antilithiatic properties of Tribulus terrestris commonly called as "gokhru" which is often used in ayurveda to treat various urinary diseases including urolithiasis.

Activation of NFkappaB is a fundamental cellular event central to all inflammatory diseases. Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) ameliorates both acute and chronic inflammation in a multitude of organ systems through modulating NFkappaB activity; nevertheless, the exact molecular mechanism remains uncertain. Here we report that HGF through inactivation of GSK3beta suppresses NFkappaB p65 phosphorylation specifically at position Ser-468.

Childhood human immunodeficiency virus-associated nephropathy (HIVAN) is defined by the presence of proteinuria associated with mesangial hyperplasia and/or global-focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, in combination with the microcystic transformation of renal tubules. This review discusses the pathogenesis of childhood HIVAN and explores how the current pathological paradigm for HIVAN in adults can be applied to children. The Human Immunodeficiency Virus-1 (HIV-1) induces renal epithelial injury in African American children with a genetic susceptibility to develop HIVAN.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of sera containing Liuwei Dihuang Pill (LDP), a compound traditional Chinese herbal medicine, and its monomer catalpol on transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1)/Smad pathway in HK-2 cells. METHODS: Wistar rats were intragastrically administered with LDP twice daily for 3 days and then sera were obtained. HK-2 cells were cultured at different concentrations of serum containing LDP.

Aristolochic acid (AA) is known as a potent mutagen that induces significant cytotoxic and mutagenic effects on renal tubular epithelial cells. Clinically, the persistent injury of AA results in the infiltration of inflammatory cells, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and renal tubulointerstitial fibrosis. There are no truly effective pharmaceuticals. In this study, we investigated the potential role of the extract of Sedum sarmentosum Bunge (SSB), a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, on rat tubuloepithelial (NRK-52E) cells after AA injury in vitro.
