Understanding mechanisms underlying longevity, and endeavor towards the specific goals of alleviating frailty in old age, require a comprehensive approach that considers the various theoretical and experimental approaches, as well as compiling the data on humans. This logistic has underlined the program of the conference, and is reflected in the present special issue. Considerable volume of data now point to distinct genes that are associated with exceptional longevity in humans, as reflected from the articles in this volume.

Subjects with exceptional longevity have a lower incidence and/or significant delay in the onset of age-related disease, and their family members may inherit biological factors that modulate aging processes and disease susceptibility. In a case control study, we aim to determine phenotype and genotype of exceptional longevity in a genetically homogenous population (Ashkenazi Jews), and their offspring, while an age-matched control group of Ashkenazi Jews was used as control groups.

In 2011, dozens of children and pregnant women in Korea died by exposure to sterilizer for household humidifier, such as Oxy(Æ) and Cefu(Æ). Until now, however, it remains unknown how the sterilizer affect the human health to cause the acute deaths. To find its toxicity for organ, we investigated the putative toxicity of the sterilizer in the cardiovascular system. The sterilizers, polyhexamethylene guanidine phosphate (PHMG, Cefu(Æ)), and oligo-[2-(2-ethoxy)-ethoxyethyl)-guanidinium-chloride (PGH, Oxy(Æ)) were treated to human lipoproteins, macrophages, and dermal fibroblast cells.

Changes in lipid metabolism with age result in lower total serum cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein concentrations. There is no evidence that longevity and lipid profiles are influenced by genetic make-up. It is difficult to establish an optimum total serum cholesterol in the elderly but values established in younger subjects give a guide. High-density lipoprotein may be even more protective in the elderly and could turn out to be a better predictor of coronary disease. Screening for the treatment of hypercholesterolaemia should be carried out in the elderly.

Diet, along with genetic and environmental factors, is considered a major aspect affecting longevity as well as vascular disease outcome. Yet, inadequate nutritional intake is rampant among the elderly, affecting nearly 44% of otherwise healthy, community-dwellers in developed countries. Thus, malnutrition, both in quali- and quantitative terms and especially as related to micronutrient intake, may exacerbate intrinsic cardiovascular maladaptation associated with aging, affecting vascular disease outcomes as well as longevity.

Although he was interested primarily in vitamin E, he shared a curiosity about the actions of carotenoids that most nutritionists have. He served on the Organizing Committee of the 8th International Symposium on Carotenoids that was held in Boston in June 1987. In that role, he was an active participant in helping to select sessions and then identifying the speakers who spoke at those sessions.

The present study highlights the efficacy of Ayurvedic herbal formulation Triphala (Terminalia chebula, Terminalia belerica, and Emblica officinalis) on total cholesterol, Low density lipoprotein (LDL), Very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), High density lipoprotein (HDL) and free fatty acid in experimentally induced hypercholesteremic rats.
