Thoracoscopy is an invasive form of endoscopy which, however, can be performed with the patient in local anaesthesia. Hence, when it comes to patients, for example, in somewhat advanced age and thus with the surgical risk clearly increased, it can be used as the smallest possible intervention to clear up causes of effusions of unknown origin and can thus be helpful in avoiding an otherwise necessary operation with all associated possible complications.

The medicinal plant Withania somnifera has been used for over centuries in Indian Ayurvedic Medicine to treat a wide spectrum of disorders. Withaferin A (WA), a bioactive compound that is isolated from this plant, has anti-inflammatory, immuno-modulatory, anti-angiogenic, and anti-cancer properties. Here we investigated malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) suppressive effects of WA and the molecular mechanisms involved.

Survivin protein is an attractive candidate for cancer immunotherapy since it is abundantly expressed in most common human cancers and mostly absent in normal adult tissues. Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a deadly cancer associated with asbestos or erionite exposure for which no successful therapies are currently available.

OBJECTIVE: Extrapleural pneumonectomy for therapy of mesothelioma has been associated with significant perioperative mortality and morbidity. Postoperative complications of this procedure require a unique management approach. We developed treatment algorithms for most of the common complications of extrapleural pneumonectomy resulting in reduced mortality and hospital stay. Complications after extrapleural pneumonectomy were further analyzed to elucidate means of prevention, early detection, and treatment.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to discuss a case of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) that presented to a chiropractic teaching clinic and review the pathophysiology of diseases associated with asbestos exposure. CLINICAL FEATURES: An 86-year-old woman had right-sided back pain at the thoracolumbar junction for 3 months; this pain prevented her from exercising on a daily basis. She was alert and oriented but in obvious distress because of her back pain. Breath sounds were decreased on the right in the posterior and lower lobes, with dull percussion and increased tactile fremitus.
