Stem bromelain, a cysteine protease isolated from pineapples, is a natural anti-inflammatory treatment, yet its mechanism of action remains unclear. Curious as to whether bromelain might affect selectin-mediated leukocyte rolling, we studied the ability of bromelain-treated human neutrophils to tether to substrates presenting immobilized P-selectin or E-selectin under shear stress. Bromelain treatment attenuated P-selectin-mediated tethering but had no effect on neutrophil recruitment on E-selectin substrates.

BACKGROUND: Skin rubdown using a dry towel to scrub the whole body is a traditional procedure. Because massage therapy is effective in improving cellular immunity, skin rubdown may also have the similar effects. MATERIAL/METHODS: Sixteen bedridden old patients, who had suffered a cerebral stroke, were studied. Skin rubdown for about 10 minutes was added for 10 days.
An open, short-term, prospective, randomized study was conducted. 114 men with chronic urethroprostatitis against chlamydial-mycoplasmal infection, mean age 41,2 +/- 0,4 years, were observed. Follow investigations were performed: PCR, microscopic examination of urethral secretions and semen, transabdominal and transrectal ultrasound examination of prostate, evaluation of indicators of local and systemic immunity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The great similarity of the genomes of humans and other species stimulated us to search for genes regulated by elements associated with human uniqueness, such as the mind-body interaction. DNA microarray technology offers the advantage of analyzing thousands of genes simultaneously, with the potential to determine healthy phenotypic changes in gene expression. The aim of this study was to determine the genomic profile and function of neutrophils in Falun Gong (FLG, an ancient Chinese Qigong) practitioners, with healthy subjects as controls.
Some plant extracts on a large range of dilutions as used in Homeopathy were tested on the chemiluminescence emission produced by polymorphonuclear leukocytes. The high stimulatory action was noticed when extracts from Uvae Ursi and Saponaria were tested, as the classical effect exerted by zymosan was exceeded. A moderate stimulatory action comparable with that of zymosan was found when extracts from Echmaceea, Aleo and Prumis were used, as well as in the case of Propolis.

BACKGROUND: Severe chronic neutropenia (SCN) places the sufferer at increased risk of bacterial infection, often requiring emergency hospital admission and long-term antibiotic treatment. METHOD: A single clinical case study of idiopathic SCN in a boy of 3 years and 8 months at the start of treatment individualized, classical homeopathic treatment was given. Neutrophil count was measured at: 5, 17, 21, 29 and 41 months after commencing treatment. RESULTS: Low neutrophil count (0.6 and 0.3 x 10(9)/L) was documented for 17 months prior to commencing treatment.
Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) was isolated from propolis (a product of honeybee hives) that has been used in folk medicine as a potent antiinflammatory agent. CAPE is cytotoxic to tumor and virally transformed but not to normal cells. Our main goal was to establish whether CAPE inhibits the tumor promoter (12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate)-induced processes associated with carcinogenesis.
Parthenolide is a sesquiterpene lactone used in folk medicine for its anti-inflammatory activity. Recent in vitro studies have shown that this compound inhibits the nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB pathway. This study examines the effect of parthenolide in endotoxic shock in rodents. Endotoxic shock was induced by administration of Escherichia coli endotoxin in rats. Three groups of rats received parthenolide (0.25, 0.5, or 1 mg/kg) 15 min before endotoxin; another group received parthenolide (1 mg/kg) 3 h after endotoxin.
Tanacetum vulgare L. (Tansy) has been extensively used in folk medicine for treatment of a variety of medical disorders. In the present study, we isolated and purified four acidic polysaccharide fractions (designated T-I to T-IV) from Tansy florets by the sequential use of hot-water extraction, ethanol precipitation, ultra-filtration, anion-exchange, and size-exclusion chromatography. The average M(r) of fractions T-I through T-IV was estimated to be 326, 151, 64 and 9 kDa, respectively, as determined by high performance size-exclusion chromatography analysis.
AIM OF THE STUDY: Species of Lychnophora are used in Brazilian folk medicine as analgesic and anti-inflammatory agents. Chlorogenic acid (CGA) and their analogues are important components of polar extracts of these species, as well in several European and Asian medicinal plants. Some of these phenolic compounds display anti-inflammatory effects. In this paper we report the isolation of CGA from Lychnophora salicifolia and its effects on functions involved in neutrophils locomotion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: LC-MS(n) data confirmed the presence of CGA in the plant.
