Modern historical research of women and nursing has largely neglected the role of religious groups, particularly in the American frontier. The image of women at the end of the 19th century was one of submission to male authority and confinement to the domestic sphere. However, in the pluralistic West, a variety of organized religious women built and administered hospitals, initiated professional nursing, and provided effective health care services.

In 1919, Michael Fischer OSC was appointed to the German charity union "Zentrale des Deutschen Caritasverbandes" (DCV) in Freiburg. He assumed his duties as the acting manager and general secretary for the German catholic union of health institutions "Verband Katholischer Kranken- und Pflegeanstalten". For nearly twenty years, he was involved in expanding and strengthening this specialized organisation.

The Franciscan Health System has designed a new employee orientation program that is both interactive and thought-provoking. The program has transitioned from a predominantly lecture-based format to one that consists of group discussion, role playing, lunch with senior leaders in the organization, and the utilization of adult learning principles. This article describes the shortcomings of the previous program, gaps identified in the needs assessment, and performance improvement methodology used to enhance the program.

The Joint Commission requires health systems to address spiritual care. Research indicates that spirituality is associated with better physical, psychological, and social health and that culturally diverse populations and individuals at end-of-life often request spiritual care. The authors report the results of a consensus conference of 21 executives representing 10 large faith-based health systems who discussed the input, process, and outcomes of a corporate model for spiritual leadership. Specific initiatives are highlighted.

A theory of ontological nature in caring administration has been developed from a Caring science perspective. Caritative leadership is named according to the motive, human love, and mercy, and its main idea is ministering to the patients. It consists of 5 theses in relation to the view of the human being: the caritas motive, dignity, measurement and meaning in health care, and the relationships in the caring culture. Without a clear vision of what care of the patients could be, there is the risk that ministering to the patient is lost in the demands of different stakeholders.

The concept of resiliency has been explored extensively in the fields of developmental psychology as an adaptive life process. Increasingly nurses have begun to study resiliency in a wide variety of settings and client populations. This article explores the concept of resiliency in nurses. Resiliency was described through the use of personal exemplar, tracing the author's odyssey of nursing homeless men in an emergency shelter. The author proposes that the traits of resiliency in nurses are widespread and largely unrecognized.

The perioperative nurse manager faces an ethical dilemma when faced with an impaired colleague. An effort to support impaired practitioners and to ensure patient safety and quality of care seem incompatible. To facilitate both, violations of the state nurse practice act must be reported, and the employee terminated if your documentation is adequate and treatment options you offer are not pursued. This harsh approach is necessary when the impaired practitioner puts patient care at risk.

OBJECTIVES: The authors describe factors that facilitate positive changes in dementia care as perceived by long-term care employees. BACKGROUND: Creating positive changes in dementia care is a complex undertaking involving multiple variables. The perspectives of long-term care employees may provide important insight and direction for a successful change process. METHODS: A convenience sample of 181 long-term care employees utilized a q-sort methodology to provide data for this descriptive study. Results were analyzed using rankings and Spearman's rho correlation coefficient.
