BACKGROUND: Eliminating nosocomial infections was identified as one of eight priorities for action for Ascension Health. St. John Hospital and Medical Center (SJHMC), and St. Vincent's Hospital (STV), designated alpha sites, developed best practices for the prevention of catheter-related blood stream infections (CR-BSIs) and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), respectively.
This paper summarizes the perspectives of 327 Australian health care chaplains concerning their interaction with physicians within the clinical context. In general terms the findings indicated that nearly 90% of chaplains believed that it was part of their professional role to consult with physicians regarding patient/family issues. Differences of involvement between volunteer and staff chaplains, Catholic and Protestant, male and female chaplains and the type of chaplaincy training are noted, as are the perspectives of chaplaincy informants regarding their role in relation to physicians.

Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) has added new leaders to focus on population health. CHI has standardized job descriptions for upper management to reflect a focus on primary care.
American healthcare has been shrouded in a cloak of negativity for too long. Many doctors are more pessimistic about the state of healthcare than they were even a few decades ago. In spite of extraordinary advances in the clinical aspects of healthcare, the business side of medicine has created a downward spiral in physician spirit, resulting in unnecessary stress, zapped energy, a rise in interpersonal conflict and, ultimately and as a byproduct of this negativity, reduced patient satisfaction. This downward spiral needs to be--and can be--stemmed.
Forty-three medical students and 78 nursing students each filled out four copies of the Interpersonal Check List. The subjects described self, ideal self as physician or nurse, and typical and ideal work partner. For each questionnaire the two summary scores Dom and Lov were computed. The results indicate a discrepancy between concepts of self and ideal self and the results also point to considerable disagreement between medical students and nursing students about their roles on the physician-nurse team.
Within the different cultural epochs there exist different concepts of what is to be meant by 'love', 'marriage', 'human communication'. Maybe we are presently in the process of a paradigmatic change. However certain basic laws within human relations will always persist, such as: erotics, attraction, strive to social security, necessity to combine positive and negative within longer lasting human relations etc. Above all there is a great individual variability. There exist no one-way solutions.
A case report of young male patient with erotomania following seminoma and orchiectomy is described in this article. The probable dynamics that lead to this delusion are then discussed. This case report demonstrates the cooperation between the oncology ward and the psychiatric liaison service.
Sexual problems, especially in the elderly, are to handle as a part of the whole personality. After an informative talk about the knowledge in the field of sexuality, we have to differ between subjective and objective problems of the patient and to find out possibilities to solve real problems and conflicts. This discussion of the problems is in every case the first step to any form of therapy.
The following paper describes a model project (currently in the trial phase at one clinic) focussing on empathetic communication within the family as an essential part of the treatment of mothers suffering from breast cancer and their children in order to activate the mother's self-healing powers and at the same time to prevent the children being traumatised as a consequence of the mother's illness.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To understand how the recipients of cadaver-harvested organs and donor families perceive the role of the transplant team and transplant coordinator in bringing them into contact. BACKGROUND: Studies dispute the benefits and disbenefits of contact and their differential weights with the two parties. For the donor family, contact with the recipient after a successful transplant renders positive meaning to the tragedy of the family's loss, but expectations of the recipient can also be disappointed.
