Expert opinion in child abuse has received considerable bad press and currently public confidence in this area of medical practice is low. Media interest has focused most on the diagnosis of factitious illness. However doctors who examine children in respect of proceedings arising from suspected sexual abuse should be mindful this area is potentially just as problematic. Widely different rates of abnormal findings have been reported. At least in part this has reflected inconsistency in interpretation.
Radially oriented ensembles of neurons and their projections, termed minicolumns, are hypothesized to be the basic microcircuit of mammalian cerebral cortex. Minicolumns can be divided into a core and a peripheral neuropil space compartment. The core of minicolumns is constrained by the migratory path of pyramidal cells and their attendant radially oriented projections. Variation in minicolumnar morphometry and density is observed both within and across species.
Parse's research method was used to investigate the meaning of serenity for survivors of a life-threatening illness or traumatic event. Ten survivors of cancer told their stories of the meaning of serenity as they had lived it in their lives. Descriptions were aided by photographs chosen by each participant to represent the meaning of serenity for them. The structure of serenity was generated through the extraction-synthesis process.
The purpose of this study was to examine the predictors and consequences associated with Instagram selfie posting. Thus, this study explored whether body image satisfaction predicts Instagram selfie posting and whether Instagram selfie posting is then associated with Instagram-related conflict and negative romantic relationship outcomes. A total of 420 Instagram users aged 18 to 62 years (M = 29.3, SD = 8.12) completed an online survey questionnaire.
This study uses an experiment embedded in a large, nationally representative survey to test whether exposure to imagery of a gay or lesbian couple's wedding influences support for gay marriage. It also tests whether any such effects depend on the nature of the image (gay or lesbian couple, kissing or not) and viewer characteristics (sex, age, race, education, religion, and ideology). Results show that exposure to imagery of a gay couple kissing reduced support for gay marriage relative to the baseline.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Studies support techniques of intraoperative adjustment under general anesthesia, of eye muscle surgery, based upon the rest position (deviation) to improve surgical results. None, however, have examined the (a)symmetry, per se, of the rest position and its influence on surgical outcomes. METHODS: Retrospective/prospective patient chart data and photographs taken of patients under anesthesia were judged for (a)symmetry of deviation and correlated with (a)symmetry of surgery performed on 51 exotropic patients.
AIM: To investigate the relationship between divine proportion and facial esthetics in frontal photographs as well as whether any of the 4 ratios for manipulation provide more favorable facial esthetics. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample comprised 20 frontal photographs of Caucasian individuals (11 males and 9 females). The photographs were digitized and stored on a compact disk. A photometric analysis was created with 7 facial segments that were measured on Image Tool software and 4 ratios between 2 facial segments calculated using Microsoft Excel.
The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the accuracy and reliability of a skeletal cephalometric analysis based on the divine proportion (Sassouni's analysis) in predicting "divinely proportioned" faces in the treatment of dentofacial deformities. Preoperative and postoperative frontal photographs of 50 patients were analyzed, and the following 5 proportions were measured: (1) TR-AL:AL-ME, (2) ME-AL:AL-LC, (3) LC-CH:CH-ME, (4) LC-AL:AL-CH, and (5) ME-CH:CH-AL (TR indicates trichion; AL, alar rim; ME, menton; LC, lateral canthus; CH, cheilion).
The International Journal of Adult Orthodontics and Orthognathic Surgery
This study was designed to investigate the changes in a number of facial proportions as a result of combined orthodontic/orthognathic surgical treatment. According to some authors, in beautiful faces, the values of the proportions measured are likely to approximate the divine proportion (1.618:1). The hypothesis for this study was that, as a result of treatment, the faces of patients in the sample would be more esthetic and therefore the measured proportions would be closer to the divine proportion than they were before treatment. Forty-six patients were included in the sample.
OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to compare selected divine or golden proportions in Class II division 1 patients treated either during the growth phase with an activator and fixed appliances or after the completion of growth with fixed appliances and orthognathic surgery; and to determine the associations between divine facial proportions and perceived facial attractiveness. METHODS: The material consisted of subjects with Class II division 1 malocclusions treated either with upper and lower fixed appliances and orthognathic surgery or with activators followed by fixed appliances.
