Cedrus deodara and Pinus roxburghii, plants mentioned in Indian literature, have been described to possess central nervous system effects and are used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat disorders of the mind. BACKGROUND: French maritime pine bark extract (PBE) has gained popularity as a dietary supplement in the treatment of various diseases due to its polyphenol-rich ingredients. Oligometric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), a class of bioflavonoid complexes, are enriched in French maritime PBE and have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Previous studies have suggested that French maritime PBE helps reduce ultraviolet radiation damage to the skin and may protect human facial skin from symptoms of photoaging.

Pinus koraiensis Bark Procyanidins Extract (PKBPE) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. In this study, we determined PKBPE effect on tumor weight, SOD (superoxidate dismutase) activity, the content of MDA (malondialdehyde) through colorimetric analysis antigenic, and expression of Ki-67, p53 and Bcl-2 on mice bearing U14 cervical cancer. Treatment with PKBPE (158 and 250 mg/kg body weight, p.o.) could inhibit U14 cervical carcinoma growth up to 47.68 and 58.94%. In addition, PKBPE enhance the activity of SOD (p<0.01) and decrease MDA content.

Pot culture experiments were conducted to examine the ecological response and biomass allocation of Pinus koraienes, Fraxinus mandshurica, Juglans mandshurica, Tilia amurensis, and Quercus mongolica. The five dominant species in the Korean pine-broadleaf forest at Changbai mountain. Their seedlings were grown under three different soil moistures, e.g., 85%-100% (CK), 65%-85% (MW) and 45%-65% (LW) of field water-holding capacity. The results showed that drought significantly decreased the individual leaf area, number of fine root, root length, and individual biomass of seedlings.

Potted saplings of Pinus koraiensis, Picea koraiensis, Larix olgensis, Populus ussuriensis, Betula platyphylla, Tilia amurensis, Traxinus mandshurica, and Acer mono, the eight dominant species in the Korean pine broadleaf forest at Changbai Mountain, were grown in open-top chambers with ambient(400 microliters.L-1) and elevated (700 microliters.L-1) CO2 concentration under natural sunlight for two growing seasons. The average height growth of these eight species under elevated CO2 increased by 10%-40%, compared with the control at ambient CO2.

The storage and distribution of Korean pine seeds on Korean pine forest floor in Changbai Mountain Nature Reserve were investigated, and the data were compared with those in 1970s when the forest was little disturbed. Based on the dependence of natural regeneration of Korean pine on seed predating animals, the effect of commercial cone-picking on natural regeneration of Korean pine was discussed. The results showed that Korean pine seeds were generally berried under litter layer, and most of them were dropped during cone-picking.

Through samples investigation, this paper analyzed and classified the community structures of overcutting original forests, secondary birch forests and larch plantation forest under different disturbances. At the same time, some indexes which can reflect the integrity and stability of stand structure were selected. Health Distance (HD) method, a new idea, was attempted to assess ecosystem health of Korean pine and broadleaved mixed forest in Changbai Mountains.

The soil N2O and CH4 fluxes in the broad-leaved Korean pine forest of Changbai Mountains under two treatments were measured by static chamber-gas chromatograph. The results showed that litter significantly influenced N2O emission and CH4 uptake, and the effect efficiency was 36.9% and 23.4%, respectively. The N2O emission fluxes of the two treatments showed similar seasonal variations, with the highest in spring, higher in summer, and lower in autumn and winter.
