BACKGROUND: Ayurveda, India's natural health care tradition, has a unique way of classifying human population based on individual constitution or prakriti. Ayurveda's tridosha theory identifies principles of motion (vata), metabolism (pitta), and structure (kapha) as discrete phenotypic groupings. Patwardhan et al.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of Xuefu Zhuyu Oral Liquid, a compound traditional Chinese herbal medicine for resolving stagnation, on hemorheology in the patients with blood-stasis syndrome due to coronary disease and their relationship with human platelet antigen-3 (HPA-3) polymorphism of membrane glycoprotein IIb (GPIIb). METHODS: Thirty-two patients with blood-stasis syndrome due to coronary disease were selected in this study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the genotype distributions of PLA1/PLA2 polymorphism in Chinese Han population from Beijing and Hebei Province and to study the correlation between the platelet membrane glycoprotein IIIa polymorphism and coronary heart disease (CHD) or CHD with blood-stasis syndrome. METHODS: A total of 110 CHD patients with blood-stasis syndrome and 102 CHD patients with non-blood stasis syndrome were enrolled in the case-control study. Thirty-nine healthy volunteers were included as normal control.

Physical constitution theory is an important part of traditional Chinese medicine theory. Physical constitution is associated with the incidence, development and prognosis of diseases. Gene polymorphism is a result of the interaction between internal and external environments during the human evolution, and it is the reason for differences in biological characteristics and disease susceptibility of individuals. Current status of the research on physical constitution theory, lung cancer syndromes and gene polymorphism are summarized in this paper.

Lycoris radiata is a perennial herb that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for a long time and has two main medicinal components in its bulb, lycorine and galanthamine. However, the original microsatellite loci have not been developed for any species of Lycoris. Total genomic DNA was extracted from fresh bulbs using a modified CTAB protocol. We isolated 10 microsatellite loci from 21 L. radiata individuals of a natural population from Yellow Mountain in Anhui Province, China. The number of alleles ranged from two to nine.

Dendrobium officinale is an endangered orchid from southeast Asia that is known for its medicinal properties in traditional Chinese medicine. We constructed an integrated genetic linkage map of an F(1) population derived from an interspecific cross between D. officinale and D. aduncum (both, 2n = 38), using expressed sequence tag-simple sequence repeats (EST-SSR) and sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP). A total of 349 polymorphic loci, including 261 SRAP loci and 88 EST-SSR loci, were identified for genetic linkage analysis.

Apoptosis has been implicated in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases such as stroke and Alzheimer's disease. Apo-1/Fas gene is one of the mediators of apoptosis in stroke. Mval polymorphism is the first polymorphic marker identified in the Apo-1/Fas gene promoter, which was typed by PCR and followed by Mval digestion and gel electrophoresis. DNA isolated from peripheral blood collected from 91 stroke patients and 103 healthy blood donors was used for genotypes of GG, GA and AA by sequence specific primer PCR.
