BACKGROUND: In older adults, diminished balance is associated with reduced physical functioning and an increased risk of falling. This is an update of a Cochrane review first published in 2007. OBJECTIVES: To examine the effects of exercise interventions on balance in older people, aged 60 and over, living in the community or in institutional care. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Bone, Joint and Muscle Trauma Group Specialised Register, CENTRAL (The Cochrane Library 2011, Issue 1), MEDLINE and EMBASE (to February 2011).

Severe oral hypersensitivity and aversive oral behaviors present a significant barrier to dental treatment and compromise oral health status. Although several authors have addressed the reduction of oral hypersensitivity and aversive behaviors (such as gagging, retching, and vomiting) in the otherwise well dental patient, treatment for patients with severe disability has not been explored. The successful management of oral hypersensitivity and aversive behavior can have significant health benefits.

OBJECTIVE: To make a preliminary appraisal of the types of unpleasant reactions reported by patients after spinal manipulation and to estimate their frequency. STUDY DESIGN: Standardized interview data collected in a longitudinal survey. METHOD: Ten chiropractors collected data on all unpleasant reactions that were reported after a maximum of six visits by ten consecutive patients per chiropractor, with the use of a questionnaire that contained mainly closed-ended questions. RESULTS: Following 368 treatments in 95 patients, some type of side-effect was reported after 1/3 of treatments.

OBJECTIVE: This study is part of an avenue of research exploring the effect of chiropractic care on balance in older adults. The purpose of this study was to (1) assess the use of the 7-item version of the Berg Balance Scale, (2) explore possible effects of an 8-week course of chiropractic care on balance as measured by the 7-item Short-Form Berg Balance Scale (SF-BBS) in adults 65 years or older with impaired balance, and (3) collect preliminary information on the possible relationships of dizziness and/or chronic pain to poor balance.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to collect preliminary information on the effect of a limited and extended course of chiropractic care on balance, chronic pain, and associated dizziness in a sample of older adults with impaired balance. METHODS: The authors conducted a randomized pilot study targeting a sample size of 30, comparing 2 schedules of chiropractic care to a no-treatment group. Group 1 (limited schedule) was treated for 8 weeks, group 2 (extended schedule) was treated for 8 weeks and then once per month for 10 months, and group 3 received no treatment.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to review the scientific literature on the effects of manual therapy interventions on falls and balance. METHODS: This systematic review included randomized and quasi-randomized controlled trials that investigated the effects of manual therapy interventions on falls or balance. Outcomes of interest were rate of falls, number of fallers reported, and measures of postural stability.
