Steadily accumulating scientific evidence supports the general importance of oxidative damage of tissue and cellular components as a primary or secondary causative factor in many different human diseases and aging processes. Our goal has been to develop sensitive and reliable means to measure the oxidative damage and defense/repair status of an individual that could be easily used by a physician to determine whether there is an immediate or long-term increased health risk to their patients with regard to oxidative damage.
Oxidative stress plays a significant role in allergic airway inflammation. Supplementation with alpha-tocopherol (alone or combined with ascorbate/vitamin C) has been assessed as an intervention for allergic airway diseases with conflicting results. Enhancing levels of airway antioxidants with oral supplements has been suggested as an intervention to protect individuals from the effect of inhaled oxidants, although it is unclear whether supplementation changes tocopherol or vitamin C levels in both serum and airway fluids.
The pathogenic hallmark of systemic lupus erythematosus is the autoimmune response against self nuclear Ags, including dsDNA. The increased expression of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-1β has been found in the cutaneous lesion and PBMCs from lupus patients, suggesting a potential involvement of this cytokine in the pathogenesis of lupus. IL-1β is produced primarily by innate immune cells such as monocytes and can promote a Th17 cell response, which is increased in lupus.
We investigated whether serum from normal weight women is less mitogenic and more apoptotic than sera from the same women in the overweight state. Sera from premenopausal women, age (mean ± SEE) 34.6 ± 0.53 years, who were randomized to caloric restriction (CR) (n = 13), CR + aerobic exercise (AE) (n = 14), or CR + resistance training (RT) (n = 20) were used to culture endometrial cancer cells.

OBJECTIVE: To study the mechanism of herbal application along meridians for treatment and prevention of asthma by using serum pharmacological test to observe the effects of serum containing herbs against the constriction of tracheal spiral strips induced by acetylcholine chloride (Ach). METHODS: Guinea pigs were randomly divided into normal control group, normal saline (NS) application group, aminophylline application group, aminophylline injection group, 1-day herb application group, 7-day herb application group and 14-day herb application group.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of serum derived from rats treated with electroacupuncture at stomach meridian acupoints on the expressions of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling substances phospholipase C gamma-1 (PLC gamma-1), protein kinase C (PKC) and c-myc in gastric mucosal cells. METHODS: Sixty rats were randomly divided into normal group, stomach meridian group, gallbladder meridian group, stomach meridian plus PD153035 group and gallbladder meridian plus PD153035 group.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of serum containing Yiqi Xiaoji Recipe (YQXJR), a compound traditional Chinese herbal medicine for benefiting qi and removing stagnation, on cell line NKN-28 of gastric cancer. METHODS: The experimental SD rats were taken as the provider of the animal serum, and the serum was inactivated before the experiment. The serum was divided into high-dose, medium-dose, low-dose and blank serum groups based on whether the rats were given YQXJR and administration dosage. The inhibition rate was regarded as the observational index.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the protective effects of Chaiqin Chengqi Decoction (CQCQD), a compound traditional Chinese herbal medicine, on acinar cells and the changes of intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca(2+)]i) in acute pancreatitis (AP) rats. METHODS: CQCQ serum (CQCQS) was prepared by intragastric administration of CQCQD in SD rats, and AP was induced in SD rats by biliary-pancreatic duct ligation method.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of Qufeng Tongluo Recipe (QFTLR), a compound of traditional Chinese herbal medicine for dispelling wind and removing obstruction in the meridians, on cell proliferation and expressions of transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) mRNAs induced by lippolysaccharide in glomerular mesangial cells from rats. METHODS: The method of serum pharmacology was used. A total of 32 rats were divided into normal control group, untreated group, QFTLR group and positive control group which also was named Monopril (fosinopril sodium) group.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the inhibitory effects of Feiyanning Decoction, a compound traditional Chinese herbal medicine for replenishing qi, nourishing essence, and diminishing stagnation by detoxification, on proliferation, migration and tube formation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). METHODS: HUVECs were isolated from the new-born umbilical core of human. Serum containing Feiyanning was prepared in SD rats by oral gavage of the Feiyanning Decoction for three days.
