As a chromatographic column, the high-speed counter-current chromatography system was equipped with a preparative HPLC series, enabling the successful isolation of hydrolysable tannins from the fruits of Terminalia chebula, a traditional Chinese medicine. The two-phase solvent system was composed of n-hexane-ethyl acetate-methanol-water (1:20:1:20 v/v). As a result, 33.2 mg chebulagic and 15.8 mg chebulinic acids were obtained in one step from 300 mg of crude extract. Their purities were determined by HPLC to be 95.3 and 96.1%, respectively.

In only three steps and in 21-67% overall yields from the natural trioxane artemisinin, a series of 21 new trioxane C-10 thioacetals was prepared. Upon receiving a single oral dose of only 6 mg/kg of the monomeric trioxane 12c combined with 18 mg/kg of mefloquine hydrochloride, Plasmodium berghei-infected mice survived on average 29.8 days after infection. Two of the four mice in this group had no parasites detectable in their blood on day 30 after infection, and they behaved normally and appeared healthy.

Bioactivity-guided purification of n-BuOH soluble fraction from the ethanol extract of Evolvulus alsinoides resulted in the isolation of two new compounds, 2,3,4-trihydroxy-3-methylbutyl 3-[3-hydroxy-4-(2,3,4-trihydroxy-2-methylbutoxy)-phenyl]-2-propenoate (1) and 1,3-di-O-caffeoyl quinic acid methyl ester (2) along with six known compounds, caffeic acid (3), 6-methoxy-7-O-beta-glucopyranoside coumarin (4), 2-C-methyl erythritol (5), kaempferol-7-O-beta-glucopyranoside (6), kaempferol-3-O-beta-glucopyranoside (7) and quecetine-3-O-beta-glucopyranoside (8).

Two novel cucurbitacins designated as neocucurbitacins A (1), possessing inhibitory activity of polyoma enhancer binding protein 2alphaA (PEBP2alphaA) and osteoclastogenesis-inhibitory factor (OCIF) gene expression in human osteoblast-like cells, and B (2) were isolated from the fruit of Luffa operculata. Their structures have been determined by extensive spectroscopic investigation.

Two new steroidal saponins were isolated from the Chinese folk medicine called Gualou-xiebai-baijiu-tang. The structures were determined to be spirost 25(27)-ene-2beta,3beta-diol-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl(1-->2)-beta-D-galactopyranoside and 26-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-22alpha-hydroxy-5beta-furost-25(27)-ene-1beta,3beta,6beta,26-tetraol-3-O-beta-D-galactopyranoside, respectively, based on chemical evidences and spectral analysis.
