Seventeen studies were examined with regard to efficacy and scientific quality of acupuncture in rheumatoid arthritis, spondarthropathy, lupus erythematosus, local and progressive systemic scleroderma. Acupuncture cannot be recommended for treatment of these diseases. By far, the most studies examined failed to show sufficient quality.

BACKGROUND: We conducted a meta-analysis evaluating the efficacy and safety of acupuncture compared to disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs in patients with ankylosing spondylitis. METHODS: Four databases including Pubmed, EMBASE, Cochrane library, and ISI Web of Science were searched in December 2014, taking also the reference section into account. Randomized controlled trials that aimed to assess the efficacy of acupuncture therapy were identified.

A 35-year-old Arab male had severe Ankylosing Spondylitis for 10 years with syndesmophyte formation in the lumbar spine, decreased spinal mobility (modified Schoeber's test of 0.5 cm), BASDAI of 4, and BASFI score of 6. He was initially started on non- steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAID) and a regular swimming program as well as physiotherapy. Due to lack of response he was started on Etanercept monotherapy. After 1 month his modified Schober's had improved to 1 cm, BASDAI to 2, and BASFI to 1. At 5 months after starting treatment, there was no further improvement.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic rheumatic disease often seek relief in unconventional treatments, but many of them do not share this information with their physician. OBJECTIVE: To explore which conventional and unconventional interventions are used by patients with ankylosing spondylitis. Which of these do they continue to use and which do they give up? PATIENTS: One-hundred fifty patients (36 female, 114 male) with ankylosing spondylitis, who presented for radon thermal treatment at the Gasteiner Heilstollen Hospital (mean age 50 +/- 11 years; disease duration 24 +/- 11 years).

BACKGROUND: The currently employed methods for quality assurance in student education are frequently considered as being inadequate. In the present study the request to plan a budget for the treatment of patients with ankylosing spondylitis is presented as an additional method to assess the influence of a teaching course on the student's attitude towards certain interventions. How would medical students distribute financial resources for the treatment of patients with ankylosing spondylitis? Does a course 'Excursion to a Spa' lead to changes in budgeting by the student?

The observation group were treated by needle-pricking the main points, Neck No. 2 nerve, Neck No. 5 nerve point, etc., combined with spinal rotation massage, and the medication group were treated with Azulfidine.

INTRODUCTION: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects sacroiliac joints, spinal column and peripheral joints. Beside medication therapy, physical and balneotherapy play an important role in its complex treatment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the research was to establish serum concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP), alpha 1-acid glycoprotein (alpha 1-AGP), ceruloplasmine (CP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (SE) before and after the balneotherapy in ankylosing spondylitis.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of comprehensive therapy on serum secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) levels in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients accompanied with osteoporosis (OP), and to explore the possible mechanisms for SPARC in AS patients accompanied with osteoporosis. METHODS: Totally 48 AS patients accompanied with OP (Group A) were treated with massage, intravenous infusion of Cervus and Cucumis Polypeptide Injection, and Bushen Quhan Zhiwang Decoction (BQZD) for 3 months.

OBJECTIVE: A large share of rheumatism patients who are treated by rheumatologists use unconventional therapies additionally. What is the frequency in patients with ankylosing spondylitis who present for treatment at a radon spa? PATIENTS: 75 patients with ankylosing spondylitis presenting for treatment at the Gasteiner Heilstollen Hospital agreed to participate in the study (6 refused). DESIGN: In an open interview a research assistant asked the patients to name all interventions which they have used for the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis.

While complementary medicine and homeopathy is becoming an increasingly prominent part of the health care practices, there is a lack of controlled studies concerning their effectiveness. In our study, we wanted to answer the question whether a combination of Formica rufa D6 and reinjection of the patient's own blood is superior to injection of placebo. 104 patients with ankylosing spondylitis entered a prospective, randomized, double-blind study.
