BACKGROUND: Human atherosclerotic lesions contain elevated levels of urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA), expressed predominantly by macrophages. METHODS AND RESULTS: To test the hypothesis that macrophage-expressed uPA contributes to the progression and complications of atherosclerosis, we generated transgenic mice with macrophage-targeted overexpression of uPA. The uPA transgene was bred into the apolipoprotein E-null background, and transgenic mice and nontransgenic littermate controls were fed an atherogenic diet.
PURPOSE: Deregulation of IGF signaling plays an important role in prostate cancer and contributes to invasion and metastasis. We determined the effect of apigenin, a plant flavone, on IGF signaling and its downstream targets in TRAMP mice. METHODS: Mice received p.o. apigenin at 20 and 50 μg/day dose for 20 weeks. ELISA, Western blotting and immunohistochemistry were performed to examine the IGF-axis and its regulated pathway in response to apigenin intake.
Central retinal artery occlusion is known to have a poor natural outcome, and also conventional therapeutic procedures e.g. paracentesis, hemodilution or local massage show unfavorable results. As in intraarterial fibrinolytic therapy in cerebral vessels, we also applied this method to the territory of the ophthalmic artery in 6 patients with occlusion of the central retinal artery. The fibrinolysis was done with a microcatheter superselectively, placed in the proximal part of the ophthalmic artery. The amount of urokinase varied from 200,000 to 900,000 IU, diluted in saline solution.

The treatment of choice in acute deep vein thrombosis continues to be controversial. Conservative treatment with heparin and anticoagulation, systemic thrombolysis, thrombectomy and the combination of local thrombolysis and surgical unblocking are possible therapies. Regarding long term results; both after non operative treatment or after venous thrombectomy, many authors describe a majority of patients who suffer from chronic venous insufficiency in varying clinical severity.
PURPOSE: To investigate the efficacy and safety of intra-arterial thrombolysis (IAT) for acute central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO). METHODS: Records from 101 CRAO patients treated with either IAT (n = 57) or standard treatment (ST; n = 44) were retrospectively reviewed. ST consisted of ocular massage and intraocular pressure-lowering agents.
We have recently demonstrated that a natural dietary supplement BreastDefend (BD), which contains extracts from medicinal mushrooms (Coriolus versicolor, Ganoderma lucidum, Phellinus linteus), medicinal herbs (Scutellaria barbata, Astragalus membranaceus, Curcuma longa), and purified biologically active nutritional compounds (diindolylmethane and quercetin), inhibits proliferation and metastatic behavior of MDA-MB-231 invasive human breast cancer cells in vitro.

Robust biological rhythms have been shown to affect life span. Biological clocks can be entrained by two feeding regimens, restricted feeding (RF) and caloric restriction (CR). RF restricts the time of food availability, whereas CR restricts the amount of calories with temporal food consumption. CR is known to retard aging and extend life span of animals via yet-unknown pathways. We hypothesize that resetting the biological clock could be one possible mechanism by which CR extends life span.

OBJECTIVE: To study the action mechanisms of Qinggan Huoxue Recipe (QGHXR), a compound traditional Chinese herbal medicine, and its separated recipes by observing their effects on expressions of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) in rats with alcoholic liver fibrosis (ALF). METHODS: A total of 150 SD rats were divided into three groups: blank group, carbon tetrachloride (C(4)) group and ALF-inducing group.
