In this paper we present the results of studying the effects of the essential oil of Calamintha glandulosa Silic (EOCG) on the isolated rat ileum. C. glandulosa Silic has been used in folk medicine as an antispasmodic. EOCG (0.003-1 mg/ml) inhibited spontaneous contraction of the ileum (EC50 of 210.48 +/- 9.12 microg/ml). The calcium channel blocking activity was confirmed by inhibition of K(+) (80 mmol/l) induced contractions with EOCG (EC50 of 88.81 +/- 6.01 microg/ml).
BACKGROUND: "Teucrium polium L." (TP) has been long recommended in Iranian folk medicine for its anti-diabetic activities. We attempt here to evaluate the effect of TP extract on insulin secretion in rat pancreas. METHODS: Rat pancreas was isolated in situ and perfused with Krebs solution containing low glucose (LG, 2.8 mM) or high glucose (HG, 16.7 mM) as perfusate. The aqueous extract (Aq. E) and methanolic extract (Met. E) of TP aerial parts and two partition fractions of Met. E were added to perfusate to evaluate insulin release.
Epimedium spp. is commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Epimedins A, B, and C are three major bioactive flavonoids found in Epimedium spp. that share similar chemical structures. In this study, the intestinal absorption mechanism of these three compounds was investigated using the Caco-2 cell monolayer model in both the apical-to-basolateral (A-B) and the basolateral-to-apical (B-A) direction.
