OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of conservative therapy in carpal tunnel syndrome. DATA SOURCES: A computer-aided search of MEDLINE and the Cochrane Collaboration was conducted for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from January 1985 to May 2006. REVIEW METHODS: RCTs were included if: (1) the patients, with clinically and electrophysiologically confirmed carpal tunnel syndrome, had not previously undergone surgical release, (2) the efficacy of one or more conservative treatment options was evaluated, (3) the study was designed as a randomized controlled trial.

AIMS: To assess the effectiveness of acupuncture for the symptomatic treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) from a review of studies using randomized controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS: Electronic databases were systematically searched for articles reporting RCTs investigating acupuncture for TMD. The methodological qualities of eligible studies were assessed using the criteria described in the Cochrane Handbook. RESULTS: Nineteen reports were systematically reviewed.

The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews

BACKGROUND: Nausea, retching and vomiting are very commonly experienced by women in early pregnancy. There are considerable physical and psychological effects on women who experience these symptoms. This is an update of a review of interventions for nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy previously published in 2003. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness and safety of all interventions for nausea, vomiting and retching in early pregnancy, up to 20 weeks' gestation. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group's Trials Register (28 May 2010).

OBJECTIVE: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a common chronic pain condition that lacks a satisfactory treatment approach. This systematic review was designed to examine the effects of acupuncture or acupoint injection on the management of BMS and to evaluate the evidence supporting the use of acupuncture therapy for BMS in clinical practice.

Annals of Nutrition & Metabolism

BACKGROUND: A vegetarian diet is considered to promote health and longevity and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and cancer. However, a vegetarian diet may be deficient in some nutrients. Exclusion of animal products in vegetarian diets may affect the status of certain B-vitamins, and further cause the rise of plasma homocysteine concentration. OBJECTIVE: The nutritional status of various B-vitamins (B(1), B(2), B(6), B(12), folic acid) and the concentration of homocysteine in blood plasma of omnivores (n = 40), vegetarians (n = 36) and vegans (n = 42) in Austria was evaluated.

Diet, along with genetic and environmental factors, is considered a major aspect affecting longevity as well as vascular disease outcome. Yet, inadequate nutritional intake is rampant among the elderly, affecting nearly 44% of otherwise healthy, community-dwellers in developed countries. Thus, malnutrition, both in quali- and quantitative terms and especially as related to micronutrient intake, may exacerbate intrinsic cardiovascular maladaptation associated with aging, affecting vascular disease outcomes as well as longevity.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Nutrition exerts a pervasive impact on normal and pathological conditions of the nervous system. One critical pathway is the methionine cycle, in which folate and B12 convert homocysteine to methionine, which is in turn converted to S-adenosyl methionine (SAM; the major methyl donor). As a consequence of methylation, however, SAM is converted to the neurotoxin homocysteine and must be excreted or drawn back into the methionine cycle, which requires additional folate and B12.

Depression is a severe and heterogeneous disorder resulting from interacting genetic, environmental, and epigenetic factors. Nutrient deficiency resulting from bariatric bypass surgery has been involved in the pathophysiological mechanisms of depression and treatment response. We report the case of a patient who developed, after a bariatric bypass surgery, a severe depressive episode, refractory to both pharmacological treatment and electroconvulsivotherapy (ECT). Folate deficiency was evidenced. A dramatic response to ECT was observed after folate supplementation.
