Schizophrenia (SZ) is associated with GABA neuron dysfunction in the hippocampus, particularly the stratum oriens of sector CA3/2. A gene expression profile analysis of human postmortem hippocampal tissue followed by a network association analysis had shown a number of genes differentially regulated in SZ, including the epigenetic factors HDAC1 and DAXX. To characterize the contribution of these factors to the developmental perturbation hypothesized to underlie SZ, lentiviral vectors carrying short hairpin RNA interference (shRNAi) for HDAC1 and DAXX were used.

Since 1978, when the first test tube baby, Louis Brown, was born, thousands of children have been born every year through in vitro fertilization. Many families keep attending fertility clinics in order to receive some treatment for their infertility problems and have a child. Children born in this way are worthy human beings. Their parents love them and devote themselves to their children admirably, showing real parental love. However, does this loving kindness justify, from an ethical point of view, any way of desiring and having a son or daughter?

The effect of various nucleotides and adenosine on the hepatic biotransformation of hexobarbital sodium (HB) and p-chloro-N-methylaniline (PCMA) was determined in male rats. Intraperitoneal administration of dibutyryl cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (DBcAMP), alone and in combination with theophylline, and the cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP)-theophylline combination prolonged HB sleeping time by more than 70%.

In this study, intravenous diazepam was a convenient, safe, and entirely adequate replacement of anesthesia for orthopaedia manipulations. It was administered in the hospital emergency room to both healthy and ill patients. A wide age range of patients was treated, and many very difficult reductions were accomplished. It is the author's firm opinion, however, that the physician using this technique should be capable of using emergency respiratory resuscitation equipment and that such equipment should be immediately available.

Pharmacological effects of ifenprodil (IP), 4-benzyl-alpha-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-beta-methyl-1-piperidineethanol-L-(+)-tartrate monohydrate (Funai Pharmaceutical), a potential vasodilator, were studied in the dog, rabbit, guinea-pig and mouse. 1) Intravenous administration of IP (0.1 approximately 1 mg/kg) exhibited a continuous fall in blood pressure, an increase in heart rate and an increase in cardiac contractile force in the dog. The depressor and chronotropic effects of IP appeared likewise in the pithed dog, and the depressor responses were slightly more evident in the rabbit.

Several 1-aryl-3-(2-pyrimidyl)thiocarbamides and their corresponding cyclized 2-arylimino-3-(2-pyrimidyl)thiazolid-4-ones were synthesized and characterized by their sharp melting points and elemental analyses. These thiocarbamides and thiazolidones possessed anticonvulsant activity against pentylenetetrazol-induced convulsions and potentiated pentobarbital-induced hypnosis in mice. Most of these thiocarbamides and thiazolidones selectively inhibited nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD)-dependent oxidation of pyruvate, where the use of added NAD dether hand, remained unaltered.

Effects of ifenprodil tartrate, a potent vasodilator, on the autonomic, peripheral and central nerve system were studied in experimental animals. In isolated vas deferens of guinea pigs, the contraction in response to noradrenaline and sympathetic nerve stimulation was competetively antagonized by ifenprodil 10(-7)--10(-5) M (pA2: 7.69 against noradrenaline). Ifenprodil (50 approximately 1,000 mug/kg i.v.) inhibited the contraction of cat nictitating membrane and dog urinary bladder induced by sympathetic nerve stimulation.

Four pharmacologic actions of intravenous ketamine (30 mg/kg) were studied in the rat. To elucidate the mechanism(s) terminating the pharmacologic effects, animals were pretreated with ketamine and agents anticipated to modify hepatic microsomal metabolism, including phenobarbital and SKF 525A.
