INTRODUCTION: Some children who sustain high-grade blunt renal injury may require operative intervention. In the present study, it was hypothesized that there are computed tomography (CT) characteristics that can identify which of these children are most likely to need operative intervention. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of all pediatric blunt renal trauma patients at a single level-I trauma center from 1990 to 2015.

Spousal abuse is a serious social problem, which includes a variety of physical, emotional, and sexual violence. Many studies conducted on this subject in different countries show that the actual severity of this problem is far greater than it seems at first glance. Because legal medical centers are the main places where victims are referred, 500 abused victims who were directed to these centers during 2012 were asked to fill out preplanned forms and the collected data were analyzed using analytic methods.
Vertebral artery dissection has been previously reported following minor head and neck trauma. Such activities as rapid head turning, tennis, yoga, and vigorous exercise have been implicated. We report a case of vertebral artery dissection following minor neck trauma suffered in a volleyball game. The anatomy of the vertebral artery, pathophysiology of dissection, and emergency department recognition and treatment of this disorder are discussed.
With improved rapid transportation systems, an increasing number of children may arrive at the emergency room (ER) without detectable vital signs and may undergo vigorous resuscitation, including emergency room thoracotomy, aortic cross clamping, and open cardiac massage. Of 1,287 pediatric trauma admissions between 1980 and 1985, 101 deaths were recorded. Fifty (50%) of the deaths occurred in the ER. Thirty-three of the patients were pronounced dead with obvious irreversible injuries, while 17 (34%) with suspected thoracoabdominal injuries underwent ER thoracotomy during resuscitation.

Traumatic impairment of peripheral nerves in the limbs requires multimodality treatment including physiotherapy, chemotherapy, orthopedic methods, massage, manual therapy. The above complex produced responses in the majority of patients treated.
OBJECTIVE: Baseball injuries account for a significant number of sports-related fatalities in children. We present a case of a 12-year-old male who died after being struck in the chest by a high velocity baseball propelled from a pitching machine. We examine the pathophysiology of blunt chest trauma, discuss possible explanations for the development of arrhythmias, review baseball-related fatalities, and suggest injury prevention strategies. DESIGN: A case report and review of the literature. SETTING: A pediatric emergency department (ED) in an urban, tertiary care, general hospital.
PURPOSE: Blunt injuries to the internal carotid artery (ICA) at the base of the skull are uncommon but potentially dangerous lesions whose management remains unclear. We report a new surgical approach of the intrapetrosal portion of the ICA that was used in six patients with the help of an ear, nose, and throat surgeon. METHODS: During a 70-month period, seven consecutive patients (four women, three men; mean age, 35.7 years; range, 21 to 59 years) were admitted, six after a motor vehicle accident and one after a cervical manipulation. All patients had a neurologic deficit.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the chiropractic treatment for a patient with low back pain accompanied by sensory and motor deficits of his left leg and magnetic resonance imaging-documented lumbar spinal cord and nerve root impingement. CLINICAL FEATURES: A 57-year-old man experienced low back pain that radiated into his left leg and subsequently produced both sensory and motor deficits of the left thigh and quadriceps followed by a similar weakness and accompanying paresthesia of the lower left leg.
