BACKGROUND: Extreme temperatures have been associated with hospitalization and death among individuals with heart failure, but few studies have explored the underlying mechanisms. OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that outdoor temperature in the Boston, Massachusetts, area (1- to 4-day moving averages) would be associated with higher levels of biomarkers of inflammation and myocyte injury in a repeated-measures study of individuals with stable heart failure.

A provisional temperature-sensitive mutant, ProTs8, of influenza A/WSN (H0N1) virus was isolated from primary chicken embryo fibroblast culture inoculated with influenza A/WSN (H0N1) and incubated with medium 199, containing 2% chicken embryo extract, and 400 micrograms/ml of 5-fluorouracil. Its EOP (efficiency of plaquing) value between 39.5 degrees C and 33 degrees C was about 0.007, and the control was about 0.82. Through lowering the shut-off-temperature to 38 degrees C, we had successfully isolated two temperature-sensitive mutants, Ts8-38 and Ts8-37, from their parent, ProTs8.

The effect of light intensity, pH, temperature, salinity on the uptake of nitrogen and phosphorus by Gracilaria tenuistipitata var. liui Zhang et Xia was were studied under laboratory conditions. The uptake rate of nitrogen reached as high as 0.32-0.36 mumol.g-1.h-1 at favorable light intensity of 800-2400 mumol photon.m-2.s-1, while that of phosphorus reached 0.017-0.018 mumol.g-1.h-1 at 320-1600 mumol photon.m-2.s-1. The nutrient uptake rate reached the maximum at pH 8.0.

Geographic variation in female reproductive characteristics and egg incubation of Chinese skink (Eumeces chinensis) was studied by using two populations from eastern (Lishui, Zhejiang) and southern (Shaoguan, Guangdong) China, respectively. The results showed that female adults of the two populations both laid a single clutch per breeding season, and the clutch size, clutch mass, and egg mass had a positive correlation with female SVL.

Rice blast is one of the main rice diseases. In order to discuss the occurrence regularity and improve the veracity of forecasting, the effects of ecological factors on infecting process, such as rice growth period, cultivar resistance, temperature, precipitation, and fertilization of nitrogen, were studied quantitatively. The results showed that adhering conidia on leaves, or ratio of infection was negatively correlative with the growth period of rice.

According to the measurements in Meiliang bay between 1998-2000, the effects of algal bloom on N, P, and K contents were studied. The results showed that the relationship between the Chl a content and temperature was positive. The lowest contents of NH4(+)-N, TN, and TP were obtained in August and September every year, and their total content was positively related to the Chl a content. The annual change of K content was similar to that of N and P. Compared to the 8th sampling point, the content of N and P at 0th and 6th sampling point was higher, and P was not the limiting factor.

The effects of soil temperature (0, 5, 15, 25, 35 degrees C) and water content on soil respiration in three forest types in Changbai Mountain were evaluated in laboratory condition. The results indicated that the soil respiration rate was positively correlated to soil temperature from 0 to 35 degrees C and it increased with soil water content from 0.21 to 0.37 kg.kg-1. The soil respiration rate decreased with soil water content when water content was over the range. The result suggested the interactive effects of temperature and water content on soil respiration.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the ecological habit and characteristics of Trichobilharzia cercariae in the Huaihe river system. METHODS: During June of 2002-May of 2003, Radix auricularia snails were collected monthly in Yaohe Fishery of the branch of the Huaihe River. The cercariae, released from the positive snails and collected by Shade Drop Bottle, were examined by direct press. Ducklings were infected by cercariae with different ages and examined for the infection by miracidia hatching method. The study on the nuclear polyhedral virus epidemic of Spodoptera litura under effects of temperature showed that at above 29 degrees C, S. litura larvae started to die 2-3 d after virus-inoculation, and reached the peak 4-5 d after the inoculation. The mortality and death velocity of virus-infected host larvae were increased with increasing incubation temperature. No thermo-inhibition temperature for the virus was observed in the test temperature range, while there existed a constant temperature range, i.e., 29-35 degrees C, for the highest mortality of infected host larvae.

Temporal changes in air temperature and urban heat island (UHI) effects during 1956-1998 were compared between a coastal city, Ji' nan, and an inland city, Xi' an, which were similar in latitude, size and development. During 1956-1978, except that the annual mean minimum temperature in Ji' nan increased by 0.37 degrees C x 10 a(-1), the temperature variables in the two cities did not display any apparent trend. During 1979-1998, all temperature variables of the two cities showed an increasing trend.
