A practical program edited by BASIC was used in this test. The test included 7 indexes of fluid intelligence by using the method of talking between man and computer: speed of mental mathematic, digit-symbol, choice reaction time, counting visual number span, tracing reaction and recognition of meaningless figures.
The objective of this study was to compare cardiorespiratory responses to exercise among older Qigong participants, Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) practitioners and normal sedentary controls during cycle ergometry. Thirty-six community-dwelling men with a mean age of 59.1 +/- 6.6 years participated in this study. Each group (Qigong, TCC and control) included 12 subjects with matched age and body size. The Qigong group practiced Qigong regularly for 2.3 +/- 1.5 years; the TCC group practiced Yang TCC for 4.7 +/- 2.3 years. Heart rate (HR) responses were measured during the practice of Qigong and TCC.
Previous studies have suggested that Taiji practice may improve immune function. This study was intended to examine whether 5 months of moderate Taiji and Qigong (TQ) practice could improve the immune response to influenza vaccine in older adults. Fifty older adults (mean age 77.2 +/- 1.3 years) participated in this study (TQ N = 27; wait-list control [CON] N = 23). Baseline pre-vaccine blood samples were collected. All subjects then received the 2003-2004 influenza vaccine during the first week of the intervention.
The scientific discovery of novel training paradigms has yielded better understanding of basic mechanisms underlying cortical plasticity, learning and development. This study is a first step in evaluating Tai Chi (TC), the Chinese slow-motion meditative exercise, as a training paradigm that, while not engaging in direct tactile stimulus training, elicits enhanced tactile acuity in long-term practitioners.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the extent to which adding a challenge to a reach test would increase the limit of stability (LOS) in young and old individuals. DESIGN: While standing on a force plate, with infrared markers on bony landmarks for motion analysis, 15 old (mean [SD], 70  yrs old) and 15 young (mean [SD], 24  yrs old) participants completed the modified functional reach test, in which they were asked to touch the farthest target possible in a series.
With advancing age, a decline in the main sensory modalities including touch sensation and perception is well reported to occur. This review mainly outlines the peripheral components of touch perception highlighting ageing influences on morphological and functional features of cutaneous mechanical transducers and mechanosensitive ion channels, sensory innervation, neurotransmitters and even vascular system required to ensure efferent function of the afferent nerve fibres in the skin.
The mechanical properties of individual motor units in the medial gastrocnemius muscle, as well as the whole muscle properties and innervating motor nucleus, were investigated in dietary-restricted, male Fischer 344/DuCrj rats at ages of 4, 7, 12, 21/22, 27, 31, and 36 mo. The tetanic tension of the type S units continuously increased until the age of 36 mo. Those of type FF and FR units declined from 21/22 to 27 mo of age but did not change further while the whole muscle tension decreased greatly.
